Opening day of New York's turkey season was a success for Kate. She bagged a hefty 24-pound gobbler with an 8-inch beard and 1-inch spurs. A little after 8 am, this Tom came in to a field where Kate was posted at the edge since before dawn. He was following a bearded hen! With one well-placed shot, Kate was able to put him down. She was also able to tape the bird coming in -- so, be sure to watch for her turkey hunt on an upcoming segment of Woods N' Water this fall. Kate will also prepare the turkey breasts with some of her delicious Asian Grill sauce on her "Cooking Wild in Kate's Kitchen" segment on tv.

Peter called in a jake for Cody. He came to within 25 yards! But, Cody opted to let him pass for the hopes of luring in a larger bird this month. Peter called in more birds later in the morning, but they were with hens and did not want to leave them.

On the second day of the season, Peter's cousin, Leo, was in the same blind Kate was in the day before. He put out a set of hen and tom decoys. At around 8:30 - he spotted a jake bird running across the field right to the hen decoy! With one shot, Leo had his first New York gobbler. He commented, "It was amazing to see how that bird spotted the deocy from way across the field. He ran to it like there was nothing that was going to get in his way!"

Only 4 days before opening day we had snow on the ground. And, opening morning at around 5 am, it had to be about 65 degrees. So, we are quite sure that this sudden warm weather has definitely been a good thing for the turkey hunting. Hens are coming out into the fields to feed and the toms are right there with them.

Remember to send us your success photos from this spring turkey season. Add about 4-5 sentences of how you took the bird and we will post it on our web site!
